Chiropractor Care in Canada
Results Oriented Treatments
Chiropractic today is one of the largest primary-contact health care professions in Canada with over 8,000 practicing chiropractors. Approximately four and a half million Canadians use the services of a chiropractor each year. Chiropractic is a regulated health profession recognized by statute in all Canadian provinces and American states.
A natural, non-invasive approach, chiropractors practice a drug-free, manual approach to health care that includes patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. In particular, chiropractors assess patients for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, and extremities, and their effect on the nervous system. As a result of taking a physical assessment and patient history, chiropractors are able to provide a differential diagnosis for the patient’s presenting condition(s) and develop a comprehensive treatment/management plan.

Chiropractors are also trained to recommend therapeutic exercise, to utilize other non-invasive therapies, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counselling.
WHAT Is A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT?
Chiropractic adjustment is the most common form of treatment utilized by chiropractors in clinical practice. Also known as spinal manipulative therapy, the adjustment is a non-invasive, very specific manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed through seven years of intensive education. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. For example, the technique is modified when treating children, pregnant women and older patients. Patients typically note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

A little bit of history
Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by DD Palmer of Port Perry, Ontario, when he treated a janitor’s spine and “cured” his deafness of 15 years.
Based on the fact that every tissue in the body is impacted by the health of the nerves which supply it, chiropractic served to ensure that interference to the nervous system was removed, especially as it pertained to spinal dysfunction or “subluxation”. This interference has the potential to cause abberent communication between the brain and the body, and negatively affect the body’s ability to heal and function.
The Doctor of Chiropractic’s expertise is to correct these subluxations and allow the body to return to its full potential.
Since those first days, chiropractic has developed into a science that utilizes many of the latest techniques and tools to care for the entire neuromusculoskeletal system.
Legislative bodies across Canada, as well as researchers and governments around the world have conducted extensive reviews of the chiropractic profession and have consistently endorsed chiropractic services.
